Am I A Good Candidate For Fat Freezing? What Determines Suitability?

Fat freezing has grown into one of the more searched about approaches to body sculpting in Singapore, often mistaken for a shortcut to weight loss. Otherwise known as Cryolipolysis, fat freezing is intended for something more specific: small, stubborn pockets of fat that haven’t responded to diet and exercise, not the broader fat associated with a higher overall body weight.

At TruGlow, this is performed using Clatuu, a device developed to treat localised areas, from the abdomen and flanks to the area under the chin.

How Does Fat Freezing Work?

Cryolipolysis applies controlled cooling to a targeted area. The treatment uses controlled cooling designed to target subcutaneous fat while protecting the surrounding skin. This exposure can trigger apoptosis, a natural process of cell breakdown, in fat cells within the treated zone.

The body then clears these cells gradually through its own processes over the following weeks, so contour changes tend to appear over that time instead of immediately after a session. Clatuu fat freezing in Singapore follows this same principle, with the device calibrated to the area and fat layer being addressed.

Understanding Stubborn Fat

Not all fat behaves the same way. Certain deposits stay resistant to diet and exercise even in people who are at a healthy, stable weight and stay physically active. Stubborn belly fat is one of the most common examples, along with fat around the flanks, inner thighs, upper arms, and the chin, where cryolipolysis is often used for double chin fat reduction.

Some localised fat deposits may persist despite weight stability, diet and exercise. Cryolipolysis is intended for selected areas of pinchable subcutaneous fat, rather than overall weight reduction.

Cryolipolysis is intended for contour improvement in selected localised areas, rather than treatment for overall weight loss or obesity.

Suitability At A Glance

The below pointers generally line up with what a suitable candidate profile looks like, rather than a checklist to self-diagnose against. Confirming actual suitability still needs a proper assessment with our clinical team.

Signs Someone May Be A Good Fit

  • Pinchable, localised fat: An adequate layer of subcutaneous fat is usually needed for cryolipolysis to be considered.
  • Realistic expectations about the outcome: Someone who understands that results appear gradually over the following weeks, and who isn’t expecting a dramatic transformation, is better matched to this treatment. Those hoping for fast or drastic changes may end up disappointed regardless of how physically suitable they are.
  • Reasonable skin firmness in the treatment area: Skin with some remaining elasticity tends to adapt better to the change in fat volume underneath it.
  • Generally good health: No underlying conditions that would make exposure to cold temperatures unsafe.
  • Healthy skin in the treatment area: No open wounds or active skin issues at the site being treated.

Signs Someone May Not Be A Good Fit

  • The main goal is overall weight loss: Cryolipolysis is designed for small, localised pockets of fat, not a reduction in weight across the whole body. If the goal is to lose weight overall, diet, exercise, or a supervised weight management programme usually come first, with cryolipolysis often reserved for pockets of fat that stay resistant afterward.
  • Seeking overall weight loss: Cryolipolysis treats localised fat rather than overall body weight. A clinician may recommend a broader weight-management approach before considering contour treatment.
  • Cold-sensitive conditions: Cryolipolysis may not be suitable for people with conditions such as cryoglobulinaemia, cold agglutinin disease or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria. A clinician should review medical history before treatment.
  • Currently pregnant or breastfeeding: Cryolipolysis is generally deferred during pregnancy. During breastfeeding, suitability should be determined by the treating clinician and the device instructions for use.
  • Raynaud’s phenomenon or other cold-related circulation concerns: These should be assessed by a clinician before cryolipolysis is recommended.

Why A Consultation Decides Suitability

Things like how thick the fat layer is, how firm the skin still is, your general body composition, and your medical history aren’t easy to judge on your own. A consultation with our clinical team is the best way to find out if cryolipolysis is right for you, whether it should be combined with another treatment, and roughly how many sessions you might need. Temporary redness, bruising, numbness, tenderness and altered sensation can occur after treatment. Rarely, paradoxical adipose hyperplasia may occur, where the treated area becomes enlarged rather than reduced and further medical or surgical management may be needed.

Fat Freezing At TruGlow

At TruGlow, Clatuu fat freezing starts with a proper assessment of your body, where the fat sits, and what you’re hoping to achieve, before any recommendation is made. Our clinical team’s approach to body sculpting is to give an honest view of whether the treatment actually fits your needs, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all protocol, whether the concern is the abdomen, flanks, or double chin fat reduction.

If you’re weighing up fat freezing in Singapore or have questions about your own suitability, do reach out to book a consultation with our clinical team at TruGlow.
